Multimedia Jobs

Given that Hollywood hosts the most vibrant motion picture industry in the world, it can be expected that there is a high demand for television, video and film camera operators. There are bright career prospects for people in this field. However, there is also fierce competition among professionals in Hollywood, that can make the process of landing a job a bit challenging. Having a clear picture of what to expect can help aspirants land a job in Hollywood because such information can help a person prepare and gain more skills, making him stand out among other candidates.

General job description

Camera operators are the ones who are responsible for producing images that tell the story of the film, the TV show or the documentary. In addition to this, camera operators are also the ones who are responsible for recording important events, particularly those involved in broadcasting. In some instances, camera operators do their own editing, making them responsible for editing soundtracks, films, TV shows, and other videos. Camera operators need the appropriate technical skills and creativity to be able to handle all the responsibilities that have been mentioned.

Specific job descriptions

Camera operators who use the video format to record events and stories are called videographers. Usually they are the ones who are hired by independent television stations, local affiliate stations and other smaller media outlets. They are also the ones who usually record special events such as weddings, which many of them do on the side. On the other hand, studio camera operators are those who work in a broadcast studio. They usually videotape their subjects from a fixed position. News camera operators are usually the ones we see that go with reporters on location to catch and record live events.

In an industry where camera operators play an important role, Hollywood continues to be the best source of employment for aspiring camera operators. However, given the fierce competition among aspirants, people would do well to know what kind of work and working conditions they can expect in Hollywood. Doing so would allow them to prepare themselves and to gain the appropriate skills they need to land a job in Hollywood.

Multimedia Lesson Plans For Mathematics

Many forms of media can be used in math lesson plans placing the medium in the role of both instructor and as a tool used by the "live" instructor. This article touches on only a few but may give you some ideas for similar ways to do this in your classroom. One educator who developed and employed multimedia into math lessons found that:

• mathematical vocabulary of the students increased (and they made a more conscious effort to USE the correct terminology)

• students asked more questions

• response quality improved

Math Lesson Plans - Medium as Instructor

Medium: Computer

When teaching concepts or skills, the computer serves best in the role of tutor. There are many programs commercially available where the computer presents information and asks questions. Then, when the learner responds, the computer evaluates the response and determines what to present next. This is called Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) or Computer Based Training (CBT).

In addition to tutorials, the computer can serve as instructor for drill and practice, simulations, and instructional games.

Medium: Video

Long before computers entered the school environment, videos have been used for instruction. Traditionally, the video served the role of instructor while the "live" instructor simply reinforced the lesson presented in the video. Today, videos are being created that may be used as BOTH the instructor and a tool the instructor uses to teach related lessons (see below).

Math Lesson Plans - Medium as Tool

Medium: Computer

When carrying out definite functions, such as graphing, calculating, and storing/retrieving information, computers behave as a tool. Students can be engaged in activities that require collecting data, organizing it, and making graphs to show their findings. Because, in the business world, a graph is typically used to explain statistics, students should be encouraged to experiment with different graphic representations and pick the one that most "forcefully" displays the data.

Medium: Video

Here are some ways that video can be used as both instructor and as a tool the "live" instructor uses to teach other concepts.

• Modeling: Video on modeling behavior can be used to teach social skills but also as tool to explore the usefulness and applications of creating models in mathematics.

• Scale: A murder mystery video can be used to teach problem solving skills and as a tool to demonstrate how scale is needed to construct a bar graph to prove the accusations against the culprit.

• Monetary system: A social studies video on life in another country can be used as a tool to teach how monetary systems are based on a standard unit of value.

These are just a few ideas. Creative instructors will continue to find interesting ways to use various mediums to teach math AND "relate" the concepts across disciplines.

The small company I work for is committed to creating quality educational videos for classroom instruction. From the earliest script stages, all subject area content, images, and music are intensely reviewed and selected for meeting appropriate grade level, curriculum objectives and standards for our proprietary productions. The videos we distribute are also screened to meet our high standards.
Teachers in the 21st century classroom will be better educators if they understand how to use multi media in their lessons, if they understand the processes that research has shown to be the most effective for improved student performance, and if they know how to find quality video resources that will enhance their lessons.

Multimedia Approach For Sustainable Knowledge Delivery

'Multimedia' is the word used to describe the combination of different digital media like text, graphics, photographs, animation clips, video, voice, and music and sound effects. The benefits of multimedia methods of information delivery are enormous. People have both visual (sight) and auditory (sound) capabilities for processing information, and multimedia products take advantage of both to convey information and knowledge in an effective manner. Materials produced using a combination of these media are generally more attractive and easy to follow than single medium products. They enable complex ideas and procedures to be presented in a simplified way, and allow the projection of more complete and rounded concepts and models. The potential benefits of 'good practices' can be shown visually and illustrated with step-by step instructions that can be followed even by those with poor literacy skills. Multimedia products are more effective in delivering messages and lead to better learning and retention. As they are electronic, they can be reproduced and used to deliver information and knowledge consistently and economically to different locations and audiences, with a flexible schedule, regardless of the availability of qualified teaching or extension staff.

An important complementary approach that can be used to link with and enrich multimedia products is the use of 'alternative media'. Alternative media in the sense used here refers to traditional ways of communicating from person to person and community to community like songs, dance, storytelling, poetry, street theatre, drama, and puppet plays. These methods have been used over centuries to convey information and knowledge from one community to another and one generation to the next. They entertain and are familiar, and can be especially successful in reaching a broad range of people and more remote communities. The 'products' can be developed locally to suit local needs, but they usually only reach a small audience. However, by capturing the plays, songs and other products electronically - on film, on tape, in photos - and including them in a multimedia product, they can be shared far more widely and used to enrich the multimedia product itself.

The multimedia approach itself is 'hi-tech', but can be made very user friendly with the right equipment and software. Even inexperienced local NGOs can develop useful multimedia products for themselves with only a small amount of training. These local products - on anything from agriculture and livestock, through health problems and sanitation, to eco-tourism, gender and equity - can be collected centrally to provide a valuable pool of resources for use in telecentres, schools, colleges and other community learning/information centres. This is the approach that IMCO is starting to develop. Read more on this at Shared Knowledge of Issue 14 - Click here.
